Prayer is about making requests. Such requests range from different kinds of needs, and wants. It could be pleading for one’s personal situations or needs, which is known as ‘Petition;’ or praying on behalf of a nation, persuading God on another person’s matter or praying for a group of people in need, which kind is called ‘Intercession.’ According to the Bible, the prayer of the righteous avails much, and that we should intercede, stand in the gap for mercy. Everybody is admonished to pray; God does not reject anybody (John 6:37) who comes to the Lord. Prayer is important no matter how great or small the concern we may have, talking to God on everything is a way of showing your trust in the Lord. The more you speak with God, the closer you are to God; hence you also feel more connected with God.
Gideon lamented before God because of the deplorable condition in which the land of Israel was in those olden days. God heard him and informed him on how Israel would conquer the enemy that bombarded their land (Judges 6:11-7:25). When you pray your spirit, soul, and body receive comfort, instruction, and hope. The Bible informs that those who hope in God would never be put to shame.
Jesus Christ prayed for the saints in the world, and many people were delivered from their problems through His prayers (John 17:1-26). Jesus taught His disciples how to pray. He taught them to pray to God the Father who is in heaven; they should worship and praise God for His greatness; they should search themselves and be sure that they were in God’s will, and repent, asking for forgiveness of any wrong doing; and forgive those who offended them; they were enjoined to ask for strength to always overcome temptations, and pray for God’s protection; they should be specific in their requests before God; and always honor God after each prayer with thanks (Matthew 6:9-13). This act of prayer is also for us today.
The best resource for prayer is the Holy Bible. You need to be constant with the Bible. The more you read the Word of God and meditate in it, the more you get information to defeat the devil. Through prayer Jacob received the favor of God by which his name was changed to Israel (Genesis 28:10-22; 32:24-32). You also can challenge God in prayer by your knowledge of the Bible, and other testimonies of wonderful working power of God in Jesus’ name. A miracle that God performed in the past is precedent for God to act on your current situation.
Simple matters lure many people into ungodliness because they cannot tarry in prayer. Do not accept defeat in your prayer life. Continue praying, and you will never regret it. Could a lawyer, after losing a case pack up his business? No, he would learn from the past and be more prepared for the future, so if your prayer seems unanswered; search, watch, and continue instantly in prayer. You will realize at the end that God is faithful. It does not matter how many Bible passages you can quote during your prayer; though it is good if you know many relevant passages to cite in your requests. Open your heart unto God; plead your case, and God will answer.
Whatever posture you are in when talking to God does not matter. We (Gabriel and Grace) have talked to God quietly, softly, and loudly; while sleeping or standing; on our knees or on our seats; in the church or while driving; when eating or working; while we close or even open our eyes. God answers prayers. God is not at fault on any unanswered cases; the fault lies with human beings. When action is delayed on your request, diligently search around the matter, the Lord will guide you.
